Saints and Soldiers (2003)
A movie about WWII. More specifically, about 5 allied soldiers stuck behind enemy lines and their attempt at getting back to their allied lines.

The weird thing about this movie is that it all takes place within what seems like a couple days.

The other "weird" thing is that the good guys die, and the bad guys are made to look good?

It wasn't a bad movie, but it wasn't great. I don't know, I think it was just over too soon. Both in playing time and script wise. I don't know, maybe it's just me.

Due to this, I can't really say whether I liked it or not.. I feel like I only watched part of it. I didn't dislike it, if that means anything.

Weird, eh?

The Last Kiss (2006)
Zach Braff (Scrubs) and Rachel Bilson (The O.C.) star in this movie along with a few others (duh). The movie starts out playing a song by Snow Patrol, that just happens to be one of my favorite songs of the moment. The song is "Chocolate". Not sure why the song is called that, really, since it's not at all about chocolate. It's in fact about a guy cheating on his girlfriend and then being sorry he did so. This makes this song a perfect fit for this movie, as this is one of the things it deals with.

I don't know what it is about Zach Braff, but I really like him. I think he's great in Scrubs, and so far, I've liked him in every movie I've seen with him in it.

Favorite lines from the movie:

"What you feel only matters to you. It's what you do to the people you say you love. That's what matters."

"Just do whatever it takes. You can't fail if you don't give up."

El Laberinto del Fauno (2006)
Or you might know it as Pan's Labyrinth. This is almost two movies in one. Not only because it's fairly long, but because of the two stories within. There's the story of the war, and there's the story of the fantasy world where magic exists. The two stories don't interact much with each other, which works out beautifully. Keeping reality and fantasy separated makes the movie that more believable.

The dialog in this movie is pure spanish, so if you don't like reading subtitles nor speak spanish, this ain't the movie for you. Subtitles are no big deal for me. I grew up with most shows having subtitles.

I'm rather surprised that I liked it as much as I did. I'm usually not one for the "wizardry" type movies. Like "Bored of The Rings". I fell asleep part way into the first movie, and never bothered to see the next two. Maybe some day I will, but I guess I'll have to start at the beginning again and see what I slept through the first time. Not having read the book, I'll need the background. I'll have to make sure I have someone to keep me awake during the movies, though.

I'm not gonna go into the story of the movie, really. I must say it was a bit more graphically violent than expected! A little uncalled for, really, I think. But I guess it helps the viewer for a negative view of "el capitan". What's a movie without a bad guy to hate, after all?

Just got myself 40 pairs of socks! They're military issue olive drab ("military green") boot socks. I only have two pairs as it is, and two the socks have holes on the heels. So I figured I need some new ones.

My current ones are Norwegian military issue, while these new ones are US military issue. I guess we'll see how they compare.

At $38.74 (~$0.97/pair) including shipping, I figured that's a good price. Bought separately, you'll pay $3-6 each pair.

This chick has a pretty cool voice! I love how she sheds a tear during the song. It's a very emotionally loaded song.

If it doesn't play for you, click here.

See more of her here.

The Departed (2006)
A tale of corruption and death. Told beutifully by Mr. Scorsese. If was a bit surprised, actually. I wasn't expecting this movie to be so good! If I'd known, I would have seen it long time ago.

The actors do a great job (even Leo DeCap!). Jack Nicholson pulls off the bad guy act like nobody else does.

The story follows two men that join the police at about the same time. Only difference is, one of them (Leo) is corrupt from the very beginning. The other one (Damon) becomes a member of a secret task force set to take down the crime boss (Nicholson) and his informants. For some reason a shrink (Vera Farmiga) is mixed into the blend of good vs. bad. Obviously this is the romantic element, although it seems a bit misplaced.

The movie is beautifully violent. Not too gory, but not too tame either.

I loved this movie!

Remember I said something about being a gadget freak and wanting an electric toothbrush?

Well, I finally got one.

I used my new Sonicare Elite 9800 for the first time last night. It'll take some getting used to. Especially making sure the lips are sealed while using it, 'cause if they're not, toothpaste goes everywhere.

It comes programmed to run for 2 minutes (four 30 second phases with a beep to know you're supposed to move to the other set of teeth). At first I thought this would be an eternity. I mean, come on, 2 minutes? Seemed like an awfully long time, at least for using a manual brush. Kicker is, though, those 2 minutes go by before you know it. So I changed the timer setting to go for 2 1/2 minutes now, giving me 30 additional seconds to clean the biting surfaces of my teeth.

I think I'm gonna like this thing, you know.

I feel like I'm rabid or something when using it, though, 'cause I keep foaming at the mouth! The "sonic" action of the brush really causes a lot of foaming of the toothpaste.

With its lights and sounds, this thing is a must have for the gadget geek! :oP

Idiocracy (2006)
I forgot that I watched this movie this last weekend. Maybe because it was so idiotic?

Basically, a stupid private in the army (Luke Wilson) is selected along with a hooker to participate in a military experiment where they are to be frozen for a year.

Due to certain events, the project is fogotten about, and the subjects stay frozen for 500 years. When they finally thaw out, they're in a world where stupid people rule. Apparently survival of the fittest didn't quite work out. Instead it was survival of the baby makers.

Idiocracy is a good title for this move, since it's pretty idiotic. It was hard to keep watching it at times, 'cause it was just that stupid.

If you have any other options, choose another movie to watch. This isn't worth it.

Saw something at lunch time that you don't see every day around here.

On the way home (yes, I go home for lunch. It's close to work, and I get to walk my dog) it was eating road kill right on the side of the road, and took off and circled right above me as I drove by. Too bad I didn't have my camera! It was huge! I brought the camera on the way back, though, and took these 3 pictures at 48x zoom. It had moved to a tree way into a field. I wasn't even sure I was taking pictures of it until I saw the pics on the computer, since it was so far away and looked pretty much like a black blob.

But as the pictures, show, it was indeed a Bald Eagle!

Two things to "report" today.

Bad news first. Red and I broke up. While it was my choice to break up, it still hurts. I think I prefer being on the receiving end of a break up. At least that way I only feel sorry for myself. Now I have to live with having broken Red's heart too. This was a pretty rough weekend.

Home of The Brave (2006)
A movie dealing mostly with the post-war effects on a soldier. The story follows 4 soldiers as they return form Iraq and try to adjust to normal life again. For some reason, though, all 4 soldiers seem to have rather severe post traumatic stress disorders (or CSR, combat stress reactions). 50 Cent stars in this movie, and frankly, he was annoying. The first part of the movie that takes place in Iraq was pretty decently done, but I feel the movie started falling apart once the soldiers returned home.

There's no lack of well known actors in this movie, but the story just doesn't have enough meat to it.

My car is an '87. It's in great shape, though. Still runs like a champ with over 200k on the engine. Body only has just over 100k on it.

Anyway, my point is, from 1987-2006 the windshield on the car didn't have a single crack or chip on it. Then last year, I managed to get two, on the very same road even. Now I have a little crack (less than 1/2" long) and a small chip. Great.

I didn't use to have any rust on it either, now it has a little bit (still only on the surface) on the drivers side fender lip. Thanks to a douchebag that opened the door of his gf's car, and smacked it into my car. If I didn't like his gf at the time, I would have yelled at him, but I figured I'd be nice to him since he was a shy type, and I didn't want his gf (let's call her D) to feel bad either.

In retrospect, I should have bitched him out. She dumped him a short time later 'cause he was just too much of a douche.

She's dating some guy she dated years ago now. They've been dating for a long time. I think she finally found a good guy. She has the cutest little daughter, too, btw. I haven't seen her in a few years, but I can only imagine she's still a cutie.

I guess winter is here (finally)!

There's been snow on the ground for a few days now, and more keeps coming occasionally. I shoveled my driveway for the first time this winter last night. There was only a couple inches of light, fluffy snow, but I figured I might as well get it out of the way before it builds up. Took me about 25 mins to do the whole thing. With a shovel. I have a snow blower, but I figured for that little (and light) snow, I might as well get the exercise of doing it by hand. I haven't been able to go to the gym lately because of being sick, so a little exercise was good for me.

I get to go to the bank today. It's payday!

I fired up the grill for dinner last night. Some Johnsonville Smoked Brats on the barbie. Tasted pretty good. I'm unable to find the dogs I really like, though, Johnsonville New Orleans Spicy Smoked Sausage. It seems nobody carries them any more. They're good, though. Really good. Toss some french fried onion on top (WalMart or Meijer brand), and it's REALLY good.

Earlier this week I cooked up some pancakes using a mix my mom sent me in the x-mas package. A lot quicker than mixing from scratch, and they taste pretty good. I think I prefer the scratch-made ones, but I might be able to tweak the "recipe" for the ready mix a little, though, to make it better. Like adding some more milk and butter to it.

I guess we're getting a new sales person (who am I kidding?.. A sales man) at work. I keeep telling them to hire some young, good looking blondes, but instead they hire old people. :oP There was this woman (girl) of dark skin (african-american, perhaps?) they interviewed for a CS position, but they didn't hire her. Too bad, 'cause she would have stirred the pot a bit around here, being young and black! Not that my coworkers are racist (to my knowledge, at least), but we've never had a person of that nature work in the office area.

Any of you listen to Howard Stern? I don't. I never really did care for his radio show. But I've watched some Howard Stern On Demand TV shows lately, and they're pretty enjoyable. I don't know if you've heard of E. G. Daily, but she's a voice talent on many movies (Babe in the city 2, Rug Rats etc). She was on HS a while ago. She's 44, and she's hot! Doesn't look a day over 33 to me.

Well, I think I'm gonna head to the bank. TTYL!

Flyboys (2006)
For some reason, the title "Flyboys" makes me think of a movie about hot shots with no real story behind it. Just a bunch of stupid (and unrealistic) flying and other stunts.

But it wasn't! While I'm sure the movie makers took some liberties with respect to history and the abilities of airplanes back then, it was good entertainment.

It had its fair share of dog fights, although I feel a little more would have been okay too. I was hoping for some good use of surround sound during said dog fights, but it left me a bit disappointed. There was use of surround sound, absolutely, but it just wasn't well enough done, I think. The vast majority of sound seemed to come from the center channel. I was hoping for some cool cross over sounds and such, but mostly just bullet firing sounds came from channels other than front.

There was of course a romantic element. What flyboy movie is complete without it? It didn't take up too much of the story, though, so it became a sub-plot, like it should be. The movie is about the flying heroes of WWI, after all, not love.

I believe this is the first WWI dog fight movie I've ever seen. And it was cool! I always had respect for those guys. Primitive equipment be damned, they gladly put their lives on the line every day. It's not like modern aircraft where you can eject and land safely on the ground if something goes amiss with your plane (like an engine fire). These guys had no choice but to go down with the plane (most likely dying on impact), burning up in the plane, jumping out and going splat on the ground or kill themselves with their side arm before the flames got to them.

Aside from the lack of sweet surround sound, and too few dog fights, this movie was very enjoyable.

Employee of the month (2006)
This is one of those movies you really don't expect much from, and when you watch it, you don't get much from.

In a nutshell: A rivalry between a box boy and the #1 cashier at a super store (actually filmed at a CostCo). Hot blonde starts working at store. Turns out she has a history of sleeping with the employee of the month. Box boy decides he wants a piece of hot blonde's ass, so the competition begins.

It has its funny moments, but overall it's pretty lame. Jessica Simpson looks pretty good, though, even though I'm not really a fan of her(s).

American Pie 5: The Naked Mile
Again, a movie you don't expect much out of. #5 in the series. #1 and #2 weren't bad, but it got pretty bad after that. Even so, this is a pretty funny movie. I LOL'ed several times. For the guys, there's lots of T&A (and even some P) in this movie. No D's, though. Sorry, ladies.

The ending was stupid (and predictable), though. I think it's funny how people seem to think high school romances mean anything. People are too young at that point to even know what love is.

If you have a midget fetish, this movie is for you too, btw. :oP

I just ran a credit check on myself and got my FICO score. My score is 812. Not too shabby since max is 850. My credit rating is excellent and better than over 90% of the US population. If it wasn't for my mortgage, I would probably have scored 850.

Cool beans.

Little Miss Sunshine (2006)
Little Miss Sunshine is a pageant, and Olive is to partake in it. Only problem is, it's across the country, and the family can't afford to fly there. So they load up the entire family in their VW bus and embark on a road trip. Members of the family consist of the suicidal gay guy, a perverted old druggie, an angry teenage boy, a rather normal mother, a failed motivational speaker for a dad, and of course, Olive.

Most of the movie takes place during the cross country trip. They encounter their fair share of problems, ranging from mechanical to legal during this trip. As the grand finale we get to see Olive's routine for the first time. Let's just say it's not a traditional performance.

It's a pretty funny movie, with the funniest character being the VW bus IMHO. The horn on the bus cracked me up!

Nature Valley Oats & Honey cereal (2007)
I love Oats & Honey granola bars. I was recently told about a new product from NV. A cereal with chunks of granola bars in it. So I picked up a box while grocery shopping this weekend. I had high hopes for this cereal, but it failed to live up to these hopes. It's by no means a bad tasting cereal, but there is just too little oats and honey in it. I'll just stick with the bars.

For a great granola cereal, try Sam's Club Member's Mark Granola w/raisins. It's the shiznitz!

Ice Age 2: The Meltdown (2006)
Wached this last night. It was a good movie! I liked it more than the first one. Scrat had a bigger part in this movie, and that's okay with me, since he's my favorite character. :o)

My dog liked the movie too. He usually only gets excited when he sees dogs on TV, but this one had him interested from beginning to end!

It's a good family movie. Heck, even without a family, I liked it a lot!
