My new shovels came in today.

Pretty cool, huh? Takes up next to no space in the car, but can be a lifesaver in a pinch!

Absolutely worth $11 each (including shipping)!

Apparently posting someone's mug like I did below is reason for being hated, and since I don't like being hated, I censored the picture.

I could have posted a much better picture, but I wasn't allowed to keep it. :o(

What does 55 pairs of military issue olive drab boot socks look like?

That's what!

Yup, those are 55 pairs of socks in bundles of 5 pairs. The guy I bought them off took a while to ship them, so he tossed in 15 extra pairs. I originally bought 40 pairs. I've given away 8 pairs, so now I "only" have 47 pairs left. That's 94 socks. I don't even have room to store them, I think. But heck, at $0.70 each pair, I'll find a way. They're warm and comfy too, btw. Wearing a pair right now, as a matter of fact.

Now if I only had some Mickey Mouse boots to go with them, I'd be all set. I have some vintage (1970) Norwegian military boots that I wear daily, so these go well with those. Heh.. My boots are 37 years old and still look brand new. :o)

Someone is literally twisting my arm to get me to write about a TV show I recently discovered. So here goes.

Entourage (2004 to present (and future) on HBO)
Take 4 guys from Queens, NY and place them in California (Hollywood, basically). Make one guy an actor (that becomes very successful over the span of the episodes), and make the 3 other guys be his "entourage" (manager, house manager/driver and... well, brother).

Basically the show follows the career of Vincent Chase. It seems every episode has a few standard ingredients: Vince gets a movie. Vince doesn't get the movie. Eric (his manager) and Ari (his agent..played by Jeremy Piven) do their thing to get the movie anyway. Sometimes they fail, though, just to spruce things up a bit. Sound like fun? Not really. And this is the weird thing about this show. It sounds like it has absolutely nothing going for it (other than cool sound track), but yet somehow, I'm drawn to it. I watched the entire 3 first seasons in less than a week! That's 34 episodes! I watched one episode after another after another. It was like a drug!

It's been raved about by others, and I guess I'm raving about it too. Even if I don't really know why.

The shows starts up again in April on HBO. I, for one, can't wait! You should give it a try. You might just like it. I was sceptical, as you are, but ended up loving it.

I was 40 minutes late for work today!

The reason? I was studying a ditch up close.

Well, what really happened, was that I was playing on the snow, fishtailing the car. On about the 3rd swing, I didn't catch it in time, and the rear end came around. Slid across the other lane and stuck the nose in the ditch. Needless to say, I was stuck. I managed to get the nose over the hump of the ditch onto the lawn, but then the rear end didn't want to clear it. I had a friend (the boss's husband, actually) come help me out with his truck. He gave me a push, and I made it over the hump into the yard. Unfortunately, the snow had a really hard and thick crust to it due to rain/ice fall over the weekend, so my car wasn't able to plow through it for more than a few feet at a time.

Eventually we gave up trying to get the car out under its own power, and hooked up a tow strap to it and used the truck to pull it out. Cops came by and asked if we're okay, which we were.

I was slapping myself later for not taking a picture of it all! I had the camera sitting on the seat right next to me. I'll see about taking pics of the ditch later. Maybe I'll Photoshop the car onto it to give the full effect.

The irony? Yesterday I ordered two collapsible shovels (army style) to put in my car in case I needed to dig it out at some point. :oP

Yep, I'm a douche. It was 100% my fault for playing in the snow. I've been off the road 3 times so far in my life, I think, and all were due to me playing. Of course, the ratio of playing to dithcing is like 1000:1, so it's not like I ditch it a lot.

Go ahead. Laugh at my expense. I deserve it. :o)

To make myself feel better, I just bought a framing nailer and a roofing nailer off Amazon for $69 each, a killer deal! Free shipping too. Yay!

Update! Got some pics. Photoshopped the car onto one too. Note that a lot of the snow had melted between this morning and taking these pictures, so it doesn't look as bad as it was. There was no clear road nor grass visible at the time.

I can't remember whether I said something about bending the rear axle on my 4-wheeler or not. In any case, I did bend it a couple weeks ago or so. Slid sideways into a big rock. At first I thought I'd bent the wheel, but it turns out I bent axle.

I checked eBay for a replacement at the time, but none were available. A new one is $150+. In the mean time, I put the wheel back on and drove it with the bent axle. It only caused a sideways wobble on the right wheel, no up and down movement, so it wasn't a big deal, really.

Then the other day I checked eBay again, and this time there was an axle off an '87 4x2 Trail Boss. Fortunately, the 2WD Trail Bosses from that era use the same rear axle as the 4WD versions, so I bid on it. Got it for $9.99 + shipping! $21.99 w/shipping. Score!

So last night I changed the axle, and now the 4-wheeler is back to normal.

Smokin' Aces (2007)
I wasn't expecting much from this after reading some reviews. Fortunately, I was pleasantly surprised. This movie gives you "much", and then some. It's an intense movie with a plot twist you don't see coming.

While it starts out a little slow, the action soon picks up. I wonder how many rounds were fired in this movie.. A whole bunch.

Jeremy Piven's character (Buddy) is a bit annoying. Kinda makes you want to reach through the screen and smack him around a bit. Granted, he's a bad guy, so you're not supposed to love him. But he's doing something right by turning state's evidence and helping take down the mob.

Anyway, yeah, Buddy is about to snitch on his mob buddies. The Feds are coming to take him into protective custody until the hearings, but at the same time, 4 teams of killers are out to shut him up. They all come together towards the climax of the movie, and boy, what a climax it is.

This is an action filled action movie. Good stuff!

Watched a couple movies this weekend (so far, at least).

The Big Lebowski (1998)
Stupid-funny movie with Jeff BRidges, John Goodman and Steve Buschemi. "The Dude" (Bridges) becomes the victim of mistaken identity, and soon finds himself involved with kidnappers, porn kings and the law.

"The rug really tied the room together." LOL!

"This isn't 'Nam, this is bowling. There are rules!"

Anyway, pretty funny stuff. A classic, I guess.

The Science of Sleep (2006)
French/English movie. Never having been high, I can only imagine what it's like. I think having watched this movie, I have a pretty good grasp of what it feels like. It's weird and dumb, but funny at the same time. 1/2 the movie is in French, though, so the usual disclaimer about subtitles applies.

"I like your boobs. I think they're very friendly and unpretencious. I'll appreciate that one day you'll show them to me."

Rode the 4-wheeler in the snow today. Managed to roll it, even. One time onto its side, and one time upside down. The snow made for a comfy landing, though, so no harm done to me or the 4-wheeler (not counting a cracked fender).

I didn't really have much to say today, but then a fleeting thought made its way back into my mind.

Who in heck designed the new Chevy Uplander?

This ugly beast has a design that so far in automotive history has only been surpassed by the Pontiac Aztek in the amount of uglyness incorporated. What's with that ugly, stubby nose? Since when do minivans have long noses? Since never! And there's good reasoning behind that. It looks horribly out of place!

They should have named it the Chevy Upchuck instead.

Casino Royale (2006)
Another movie in the James Bond series. The hype I've been hearing about this movie is that it's one of the best Bond movies ever. I wholeheartedly disagree.

With the exception of the opening scene (jumping), the movie was mediocre at best.

I LOL'ed when the Aston Martin DB-S flipper over. It's not a damn Ford Explorer! It's not gonna tip over simply by turning the wheel sharply! Nice car, though.

I was disappointed in this movie. I still think Roger Moore was the best Bond to date.

In other news.. how 'bout that snow, huh?

Do I have a sign over my head telling lost animals to seek me out?

This is what I woke up to Sunday morning:

Again, a lost animal finds me. I don't know how they do it. I've lost count over how many have found their way to my place now.

On the bright side, though, this little guy had a name/address/phone number tag on him, so I called the owner. Turns out he'd lost the dog the day before while hunting. He'd spent hours looking for him, and was just about to go out to look for him again when I called. They came and picked the dog up a while later, and both puppy and owners were happy to be together again. Finally a good outcome!

Here's a picture of my furnace in action.. just because.

I took my furnace apart today!

I've never done it before, but I figured if some dude can do it for $100+, I can do it myself for less (under $10, actually, for a nozzle and filter).

So I tore it apart today. My god was it a mess. I'm surprised the thing even worked. The burner nozzle was covered in a sticky goo (it's an oil burning furnace, so it's a "messy" burn). The igniter electrodes were covered in soot. The burn chamber was surprisingly clean, though. I vacuumed out what little dust was in there anyway.

I took the burner apart to clean the blower, put a new nozzle in and clean and adjust the igniter electrodes. The electrodes were a bit rounded on the ends, so I out them on the bench grinder real quick to get more of a point on them. Once I cleaned it all good, I adjusted the electrodes according to the dimensions on the sticker, then I put the burner back together and bolted it back onto the furnace.

I had already changed the inline fuel filter before starting on the furnace, so all that was left now was to bleed the fuel line of air, then see if it worked.

It fired up right away and ran like a champ! Yay me! $100+ saved.

I couldn't get the access panels off to clean the heat exchanger, so I'll have to do that some other time. But at least the burner is in good order again. No more delayed ignition (or BOOM's in the night, if you will).

It may seem a bit intimidating at first, but an oil burner really is a very simple machine. All it is is an air pump, fuel pump, nozzle and igniter. A piece of cake when you break it down, really. Even so, if you screw it up, there's a good chance of personal and/or property damage. So double check everything!

Thursday February 8th 2007

I worked out at the gym last night. Last night was legs/back night. I still do some bench and arm stuff, though, but shorter (and often heavier) sets. First I lifted 185 lbs on the incline bench. That's 30 lbs more than just a couple weeks ago. I've been trying to agressively add weight on the exercise.

After a set of 8 with some warm-up weight (185 lbs) on the flat bench, I did 3 reps with 225 lbs then decided to toss on a pair of 10 lbs plates. That's 245 lbs, 20 lbs more than I've ever pressed on the flat bench (I've done it before on the decline bench).

I remember just a few months ago I kept trying 225 lbs, and I just wasn't able to lift it. I got a guy to spot me just in case I wasn't able to get it off my chest. I did two reps without any kind of assistance at all!! As easy as it felt, I'm pretty confident I should be able to press 255 lbs too. I'll have to try that at some point.

It's cool when all the hard work pays off! :o)

Just a note on the sunrise pictures. The beam of light that appears to come straight up from the sun is not a result of the camera opticals or anything like that.. It really looked just like that!

If you didn't already notice, look again, and you'll see what I'm talking about. I thought it was really cool. Almost looked like a big search light!
